ANGOLA, Ind./ADRIAN, Mich. – The Earlham College men's tennis team began its non-traditional season with victories over Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) members Trine University 9-0 and Adrian College 5-4 on Sunday.
In the sweep of the Thunder, no doubles team for the Quakers surrendered over four games. Junior Vitalii Stadnyk and sophomore Adarsh Singh took care of Victor Flynn and Judson Quinn 8-4 at first doubles. Freshmen Fernando Bulnes Aramburu and Aleksandr Sergeev as well as freshmen Jake Brown and Jason Lawson won second and third doubles respectively 8-3.
Stadnyk, Bulnes Aramburu, and Singh breezed to straight set victories at first, second, and third singles respectively. Brown took care of Colin Couch 6-4, 6-1 at sixth singles while Sergeev edged Blake Trusty 1-6, 6-0, 1-0(12-10) at fifth singles. Quinn defeated freshman Joaquin Lerner 6-2, 7-5 at fourth singles to give Trine its one flight victory.
In the close victory over Adrian, the Quakers took a 2-1 lead after doubles. Singh and Sergeev defeated Trevor Witty and Jeff Sophiea 8-5 at second doubles while Lawson and Lerner won their third doubles match 8-6. Stadnyk and Bulnes Aramburu lost to Joey Loselle and Brian Brom 9-8(2) at first doubles.
In singles, Stadnyk, Bulnes Aramburu, and Sergeev earned straight set victories at first, third, and fourth singles respectively. The Bulldogs took the other three singles flights, though second and sixth singles were in third set tiebreaks.
Earlham returns to action on Sept. 23-25 for the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Central Regional hosted by Kalamazoo College.
