Field hockey upended by DePauw in OT heartbreaker

Box Score

GREENCASTLE, Ind. – Earlham College field hockey's hopes for an upset conference victory on the road were dashed when DePauw University's Kate Milner scored with 8:32 remaining in the second overtime period, lifting the Tigers to a 3-2 win over the Quakers on Wednesday evening at Reavis Stadium.

Earlham rallied to take a 2-1 lead over DePauw at the halftime intermission after Milner put the Tigers on the board early off an assist from Corina Bourantas.

First year Denise Bergdolt knotted the game at 1-1 with 25:59 left in the first half – less than two minutes after Milner's goal. Sophomore Sofia Salvatore put the Quakers in front, 2-1, with an unassisted goal with 16:58 showing on the first half game clock.

The Quakers successfully held the Tigers at bay until the 9:50 mark of the second half, when Sarah Simon tied things up in DePauw's favor with an unassisted goal. Neither team was able to find the game-winning goal over the remainder of regulation, forcing overtime.

After a scoreless first 10 minutes of OT, Milner found the back of the Earlham cage at the end of a three-shot flurry, with the first two shots successfully stopped by Quaker goalie Margaret Murphy.

DePauw dominated the stat sheet, outshooting Earlham, 22-3. The Tigers also had an 8-2 advantage in penalty corner opportunities. Murphy charted 11 saves – one off her season high – over her 81-plus minutes in the Earlham cage. DePauw goalie Allie Duranceau did not record a single save on the evening.

Earlham returns home for three straight home games in an eight-day span, starting with a matchup with Wittenberg University on Saturday, Oct. 6, at 11:00 a.m. at Moss Field at Darrell Beane Stadium.
