Field hockey falls to Rhodes in tourney closer

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Earlham field hockey completed play at the Rhodes College Invitational with a 2-0 loss to the host Rhodes Lynx, Sunday afternoon at Mason Field.

Rhodes tallied a goal in each half, with Maria Varat putting the Lynx on the scoreboard with just under four minutes remaining in the opening frame. Ashley Neiswender doubled Rhodes' lead with 19:16 left in the second half, giving the Lynx a 2-0 lead.

Margaret Murphy got the start in goal for the Quakers, and charted 12 saves over her 66+ minutes in the cage. Camille van der Vaart played briefly in the second half and recorded one save with one goal allowed.

Rhodes outshot Earlham, 24-7, and the Lynx had a 14-5 advantage in penalty corners.

Earlham returns to action on Wednesday, Sept. 5, when it travels to Wittenberg University. Game time is slated for 4:30 p.m.
