Field hockey opens 2019 with victory over Concordia Wisconsin

MEQUON, Wis. – Earlham College field hockey opened its 2019 season with a 2-1 victory over Concordia Wisconsin, Saturday afternoon at Tomasini Stadium.

Earlham struck first with an unassisted goal by Olivia Layne with 9:03 remaining in the second quarter, giving the Quakers a 1-0 lead. CUW evened things up just under three minutes later on a score by Kelsey Fulton, sending the teams into the halftime intermission with a 1-1 tie.

Denise Bergdolt put the Quakers in front with an unassisted strike with 9:09 remaining in the game, and Earlham held off CUW the rest of the way for the win.

Each team tallied 10 shots, with Earlham goalie Meg Murphy finishing the game with five saves. Concordia Wisconsin's Katelyn Fitzgerald registered five stops in the Falcons' goal.

The two teams will play a rematch on Sunday, Sept. 1, at 12:00 p.m.
