Field hockey falters at Ohio Wesleyan

DELAWARE, Ohio – Earlham College field hockey was unable to carry the momentum of an early goal through its clash with Ohio Wesleyan and fell to the host Battling Bishops, 4-1, on Saturday morning at Selby Stadium.

Denise Bergdolt put Earlham (4-3) on the scoreboard just 78 seconds into the game with a shot from five yards out that beat Ohio Wesleyan goalie Katie Doiron.

The Quakers held that lead for a little over two minutes. The Bishops' Madisyn Bunke scored off a cross from Jamie Grant with 11:24 remaining in the opening frame, knotting the game at 1-1. The game remained tied through the remainder of the first half, with OWU holding a 6-1 advantage in shots taken.

Ohio Wesleyan scored the go-ahead goal with 12:56 showing in the third quarter, with Astrid Koek finding the back of the Earlham cage off a pass from Cayla Homsher. The Battling Bishops picked up insurance goals from Ashley Barno and Madison Bruno on their way to the 4-1 final score.

Earlham goalie Meg Murphy charted 12 saves for the Quakers, matching her career high. Doiron and Genna Paulick combined to register one save for the Battling Bishops.

Earlham field hockey returns to action on Tuesday, Sept. 24, when the Quakers host DePauw University in a 6:00 p.m. contest at Darrell Beane Stadium.
