Baseball powers past MSJ for conference sweep

CINCINNATI, Ohio – The Earlham College baseball team began its 2022 conference slate with a pair of wins at Mount St. Joseph University on Saturday afternoon. 

The Quakers improved to 13-5 (2-0 HCAC) while the Lions fell to 8-12 (0-4 HCAC).

GAME ONE: EARLHAM 7   MSJ: 4

Justin Dillhoff pitched a complete nine innings and earned the win in game one of the series with nine hits and seven strikeouts recorded. 

Cameron McCabe led the Quaker offense with three hits and three RBI. Nathan Lancianese recorded three hits and two doubles on five plate appearances. 

After struggling to get on base in the opening three innings, the Quakers recorded two runs off two hits and an error in the top of the fourth. McCabe smacked a double down the left field line to allow Easton Embry and Andrew Bradley to reach home for the score. 

Bradley and Embry each recorded an RBI in the top of the fifth inning with outfield singles to bring the Lancianese brothers home and increase the Earlham lead. Devin Basley capped off the inning with a single to the shortstop which allowed Bradley to score a second run. 

Basley recorded another RBI in the top of the seventh inning with a double to left field to score Maxwell Fries. The final Quaker run of the contest came from Basley with help from a single up the middle by McCabe. 


GAME TWO: EARLHAM: 12   MSJ: 8

A six-run second inning powered the Quakers in the second game of the series. With the Quakers already leading 3-0, Christian Lancianese hit a home run to left field for a two-RBI shot. Later in the inning, Bradley tabbed his third homer of the season over the left field fence, bringing Fries home with him. 

After a home run to left-center field in the third inning from Basley, the Quakers led 7-0 in game two. 

Aidan Talarek earned the win on the mound after pitching 6.2 innings and accounting for three earned runs. The senior pitcher recorded three strikeouts and eight hits. Nick Carrizales concluded the game with two innings and one strikeout while only allowing two baserunners on eight batters faced. 

Nathan Lancianese led the offense with three hits and two RBI while Bradley had a strong second game with one hit and three RBI. 

The Quakers will continue conference play in Sadler Stadium on Tuesday against Defiance College. First pitch of the doubleheader is slated for 5 pm.
