HANOVER, Ind. – The Earlham College track and field team competed in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Championship meet at Hanover College over the weekend.
The men's squad finished in eighth place after scoring 43 points on the weekend while the women finished in 10th place with 17 points.
Quaker student athletes wishing to continue competing throughout the championship season will have a chance to travel to the Dr. Keeler Invitational at North Central College on May 12th.
Here are some of the top performers of the championships for the Quakers:
Connor Del Carmen: The freshman distance runner earned a pair of all-conference honors after placing in the two longest events of the meet. On Friday, Del Carmen finished in second place in the 10,000 meter run with a time of 31:35.91. He edged out an athlete from Rose-Hulman by just .75 at the finish line. He then scored another second-place finish in the 5k on Saturday, finishing the race in 15:18.39. He also just missed out on points with a ninth-place result in the 1500 with his time of 4:17.16.
John Mahaney: The senior thrower won the men's javelin throw on his first throw with a heave of 49.94 meters. Mahaney cleared the second-place mark by almost two feet to take the win. He also competed in the hammer throw where he recorded a mark of 33.10 meters.
Elena Stirn: Stirn won her heat of the 800 meter run on Friday by three seconds to qualify for the final. When she returned for the final on Saturday, she recorded a third-place finish in a tightly-packed lead group and had a finishing time of 2:26.94. Stirn also finished in seventh place in the 1500 meter run with a competitive time of 5:22.24.
Ian Gorley: Gorley scored points in both the long-distance events, starting off with a sixth-place result in the 10k on Friday. He continued with an eighth-place finish in the 5k on Saturday's final.
Madison Huelskamp: The jumper from Sydney, Ohio placed in both of her events at the championship meet. On Friday, she jumped 4.71 meters to take sixth place in the long jump. She achieved another sixth-place finish on Saturday in the triple jump with a leap of 9.11 meters.
Blessed Shumba: Shumba scored in a pair of jumping events. He earned all-conference honors in the triple jump with a third-place finish and a mark of 13.17 meters in the triple jump. He also scored a fifth-place finish in the long jump with a jump of 5.90 meters.
Conner Hubbard: The junior thrower started his weekend off with a sixth-place finish in the discus with a mark of 40.63 meters. He finished in 10th place in the shot put after posting a mark of 13.00 meters.
Olivia Kyrk: Liv placed sixth in the high jump after clearing 1.39 meters. The sophomore jumper struggled at the 1.34 height, but recovered to clear 1.39 on her first attempt.
David Turner: Turner turned in a sixth-place performance in the high jump by clearing 1.74 meters on his second attempt. He only recorded two misses before bowing out of competition at 1.79.
Josh Ozanne: The senior jumped put in two solid efforts in the high jump and triple jump. Ozanne cleared 1.74 meters to finish in eighth place in the high jump, and finished ninth in the triple with a mark of 12.16 meters.
