RICHMOND – The Earlham College men's lacrosse team preps for its first season under the leadership of new interim head coach, Taylor Lanzillo.
THE SCHEDULE
The season begins on Saturday with Concordia University Chicago traveling to Darrell Beane Stadium for a 5 pm matchup. The Quakers scored their largest win in program history last season with a 16-0 result against the Cougars. After CUC, Wilmington College will make the trip to Richmond for the Annual Quaker Bowl Rivalry Game on February 22. Earlham will then take on Kalamazoo College on February 25 before a 10-game road streak in the middle of the season. EC will travel to Ohio Athletic Conference schools Mount Union and Heidleberg, as well as DePauw, Hiram, and Wabash from the North Coast Athletic Conference. The Heartland Collegiate Lacrosse Conference schedule begins at Mount St. Joseph on April 5 at 7 pm, with Spalding and Anderson concluding the slate in Darrell Beane Stadium in the third week of April.
THE PLAYERS
Five Quakers earned a spot on the HCLC Athletes to Watch list for the 2023 season. Goalkeeper
Emmitt Shaughnessy returns to the cage after starting all 15 games in 2022. Shaughnessy collected 179 saves on over 700 shots faced in the season.
Sam Sargent was the leading scorer for the Quakers last season. The senior scored 30 goals and dished out 14 assists, accounting for nearly half of the goals scored during the season.
Donovan Shea returns to the Quaker midfield after starting in all 15 games last year. Shea recorded 98 ground balls, 51 caused turnovers, two goals, and won 38 faceoffs on the season.
Ben Adkins played a consistent role on defense last year with 15 starts. He recorded 39 ground balls and 31 caused turnovers in his freshman season, and will make the transition to midfield for 2023. Also noted as an athlete to watch was freshman
Ethan Upton. Upton will be stepping into the defensive role for his rookie season with the Quake.
THE COACHES
Lanzillo comes to the EC coaching staff after completing a graduate assistant program at his alma mater, North Greenville University. In his final year with the program, Lanzillo helped the Crusaders to a nine-win season that ended in the conference semifinals. Six players earned all-conference recognition, including Freshman of the Year honors.
HCAC OUTLOOK
Earlham was picked seventh in the HCLC preseason poll. The Quakers earned 13 votes, and were fourth highest in the North Division.
