RICHMOND – The Earlham College women's soccer team began its 2023 season with a 4-2 loss to Wilmington College in Matlack-Messer Stadium.
First-year
Isabel Slone began her collegiate career with a goal in just the fourth minute of play Friday afternoon. Slone managed to get control of a rebounded shot after
Mallory Smith volleyed a corner kick from
Noelle Hooper.
Wilmington responded with an equalizer in the 13th minute of play.
In the 22nd minute, Smith got sent on a through ball deep in Fightin' Quaker territory by
Alyssa Jennings on the near side of the field. Smith collected the pass, and placed a shot to the bottom right corner for the score.
Wilmington tied the game in the 36th minute, and the teams took the halftime break equal at two.
Wilmington added scores in both the 51st and 54th minutes of play to win 4-2.
This match marks the first time since 2010 that Earlham has scored two or more goals against Wilmington. The 2010 squad won the Quaker Bowl Matchup 2-0 at home.
The Quakers will continue their season on the road at Spalding on Wednesday at 6 pm.
