RICHMOND, Ind. – The Earlham College baseball team got revenge on The University of Olivet with a sweep on Sunday in Sadler Stadium.
Max Fries boosted his batting average to .545 with five hits today. The fifth-year senior scored five runs and drove in five more. Fries also stole three bases, and had two extra base hits.
Sean Jeffries had three hits in game one, all doubles, and drove in two runs.
Phoenix Guzzi went 4-for-8 with a triple, a double and two RBI in his first action in two years.
GAME ONE: EARLHAM 7 OLIVET 4
Hayden Scalf got the start in game one, and tossed four innings with eight hits and two runs allowed. Scarf led the game with the lead, and recorded six strikeouts.
Kyle Jeffries threw four innings in relief, and earned the win with just three hits and one earned run. Jeffries tossed three strikeouts.
Cayman Huntsman earned the save in the final inning with two strikeouts on three batters faced.
The Quakers earned two baserunners with two outs in the bottom of the first inning, and
Max Stewart drove both in to score with a double deep down the left field line. The Comets responded with one run each in the second and third innings.
Tied at two, Guzzi put a ball in play to score
Reece Zonts after a leadoff triple from the Quaker DH. The score opened up after a Fries triple in the seventh inning to clear the bases. He reached home shortly after on an RBI from Stewart.
The Comets knocked in a run on an outfield single in the eighth inning, and plated a run on a throwing error from a strikeout.
GAME TWO: EARLHAM 14 OLIVET 4
Braeden Lewis threw a quality start in game two with six innings pitched, two earned runs, six hits and five strikeouts.
Hans Carter threw the final inning and recorded two strikeouts.
Olivet scored a run on an error, and homered in Lewis' first inning in a Quaker uniform, but the sophomore from Oshawa, Ontario kept the visitors scoreless after.
Nine runs were plated for the Quakers in the bottom of the third inning as EC batted around the order with six hits and four walks. Earlham opened its lead to 11 runs in the bottom of the sixth inning on a two-run double by Johnathan Jimenez.
The Quakers will be back in action next weekend in Sadler Stadium with a three-game series with Kalamazoo College. First pitch for Saturday's doubleheader is slated for 12 pm.
