Box Score CINCINNATI, Ohio – The Earlham College baseball team dropped the opening game of a weekend series at Mount St. Joseph University 12-10 on Friday evening.
Hayden Scalf tossed five innings in the start, with four earned runs and three strikeouts.
David Lally struck out two batters in 1.2 innings of work with two hits allowed.
Batting leadoff,
Sean Jeffries went 3-for-5 with a double, a home run, two RBI and three runs scored.
Reece Zonts had two hits, including a triple, three RBI and two runs scored.
Ian Bullis and
Phoenix Guzzi each had two hits with one double, and two RBI.
The Lions scored three runs on three hits and an error, and left the bases loaded in the bottom of the first inning. Bullis responded with an RBI-single in the top of the second to score
Quin Adelson.
After one run in the bottom of the second, Jeffries popped an RBI-double to right field for
Nate Whetstine to score after stealing second base.
Max Fries then recorded an RBI on a ball put in play to the shortstop.
The Lions once again plated three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Jeffries launched a solo homer over the right field fence in the top of the fifth inning to bring the score to 7-4.
In the top of the sixth inning, Zonts sent a triple to center field to bring Adelson home.Guzzi then brought Zonts home with an outfield single.
Leading 7-6, the Lions hit an RBI fielder's choice in the bottom of the sixth inning. The Quakers then took the lead in the top of the seventh. First Zonts hit a 2-RBI single to left-center. Bullis and Guzzi then hit back-to-back RBI-doubles to give the Quakers a 10-8 lead.
The Lions plated one run in the bottom of the seventh inning, and two runs in the eighth.
The Quakers will have a shot at redemption tomorrow with a doubleheader against the Lions starting at noon in Cincinnati.
