RICHMOND, Ind. – The Earlham College baseball team celebrated Senior Day in Sadler Stadium with a sweep of Transylvania University on Saturday afternoon in Sadler Stadium. The Quakers outscored the No.22 ranked Pioneers 18-6 on the day.
The Quakers stopped the Pioneers from extending a 12-game winning streak, as the conference-leaders had won 18 of their last 20 games with a 30-6 record entering today.
GAME ONE: EARLHAM 10 TRANSYLVANIA 4
As part of Senior Day festivities, five seniors were recognized before the start of game one, and senior
Evan Griswold threw the honorary first pitch.
Hayden Scalf earned the win with a six-inning start, allowing four runs on four hits with six strikeouts.
Kyle Jeffries earned his first career save after throwing three innings with one baserunner and one strikeout.
Mitchell Roether had the hot bat in game one, going 2-for-5 with a double, a home run, and six RBI.
Nate Whetstine started off his Senior Day with three hits and two RBI with two runs scored.
Max Fries and
Sean Jeffries both had two hits with multiple runs scored.
The Pioneers plated three runs on two hits in the top of the first inning after a leadoff walk. The visitors also added a run on a sac fly in the top of the third.
Trailing 4-0, Whetstine worked his way to third base, where a single by Jeffries brought the catcher home. With two runners on later in the inning, Roether launched the first home run of the day for three RBI.
Fries reached on a catcher's interference in the bottom of the third inning, loading the bases for a three-run double by Roether.
Ian Bullis earned an RBI on a walk in the bottom of the seventh inning, and Whetstine brought two runs in with an outfield single.
GAME TWO: EARLHAM 8 TRANSYLVANIA 2
Dillon Fischer threw the fifth complete game of the season for the Quaker pitching staff, crucially saving the bullpen for tomorrow's doubleheader. Fischer allowed just five baserunners and two earned runs with eight strikeouts.
In his 100th collegiate game,
Quin Adelson scored his 100th career hit, and scored a run. Fries added two more hits, and etched his way into fourth place on the career home runs list after clearing the Maroon Monster in the bottom of the eighth inning. Roether went 3-for-3 in game two with two doubles and one run scored; he was intentionally walked in his last two plate appearances.
Jonathan Jimenez had a double and an RBI, and tied the school record with 35 walks this season.
Scoreless through three innings, Transylvania put the first run up with an infield groundout in the fourth inning. A solo homer with two outs in the top of the fifth inning put Transylvania up 2-0.
In the bottom of the fifth, Jimenez hit an RBI-double to left field.
Phoenix Guzzi then celebrated Senior Day with a two-run single up the middle of the infield.
Reece Zonts tripled in the bottom of the seventh inning for two more Quaker runs.
With two base runners and two outs in the bottom of the eighth, Fries hit a no-doubter over the Maroon Monster in left field that smacked into a helpless car waiting in the parking lot.
The Quakers will conclude the regular season tomorrow at Defiance College with a doubleheader beginning at 12 pm. Currently in eighth place in the conference standings, the Quakers are just one game out of playoff contention with one more day of action remaining.
