WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The Earlham College softball team won both of its matchups on Thursday at THE Spring Games in Florida.
GAME ONE: EARLHAM 4 MARYWOOD 1
Shelby Messer earned her first collegiate win, throwing four shutout innings with just one hit allowed. The freshman scored eight strikeouts.
Tatum Rickert earned a save with .2 innings pitched and one strikeout.
Bo Shelton led the Quakers at the plate, hitting 3-3 with an RBI.
Kymara Kennedy went 2-3 with two steals, two runs scored and a walk.
Keely Hubbard also had a multi-hit day, and stole one bag.
After a leadoff single by Kennedy,
Emmerie Stump hit an infield single for an RBI and a 1-0 Quaker lead. In the bottom of the third inning, Earlham loaded the bases with one out off of a pair of singles and a walk. Shelton brought one run in with an RBI single to right field, and
Drew Tubesing hit a single to center field for another run.
Faith Butler recorded an RBI on an infield groundout for a 4-0 Quaker lead.
With the help of two errors in the top of the sixth inning, Marywood scored its only run of the game. The Pacers threatened in the seventh inning, putting two runners on with one out, but Rickert came in for two straight outs and the save.
GAME TWO: EARLHAM 12 SUFFOLK 0 (5 Innings)
The Quaker offense broke out in the second game of the day with a 12-0 win in just five innings of action. Shelton went 2-4 with four RBI, a double, a home run, and two runs scored.
Malaya Tanglao scored a team-high three hits with two RBI and two runs scored. Batting leadoff,
Macie Ferguson had two hits, including a double, two steals, two runs scored and one RBI.
Rickert threw the opening three innings with two hits allowed, and two strikeouts.
Morgan Cooksey came in for two innings of relief work with one hit.
Ferguson began the game with a leadoff single, and stole second base before coming home to score on a single by Tanglao. Shelton then added a run with an RBI-double to left field.
Earlham added six runs on six hits in the top of the third inning, sending 12 batters to the plate. Earlham scored five runs on four hits, batting around the order before the first out was recorded.
Ashley Lewis started the action with a leadoff single, and scored on a ball put in play by Shelton.
Mackenzie Harvey tallied two RBI on a single to right field with the bases loaded, and
Caitlyn Brooks put down a bunt for a single and an RBI.
Shelby Hill earned a walk as a pinch hitter for an RBI. With two outs, Tanglao hit an RBI-single to center field to put the Quakers up 8-0.
In the top of the fifth inning,
Mikala Newland hit a one-out triple to right field. Ferguson then brought her home with an RBI-double to left field. After stealing third, Ferguson came home on an RBI-single by Lewis. With two outs, Shelton knocked the first homer of the year for Earlham with a two-run shot to center field.
The Quakers conclude their Spring Break trip with a pair of games tomorrow beginning at 9 am in Winter Haven.
