CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Earlham College volleyball team opened the Case Western Tournament with a 3-2 win over Westminster College on Friday evening.
The Quaker offense took some time to find its footing, swinging at a .152 clip with 24 errors through four sets. But in the fifth and final set, the Quakers scored 13 kills on 15 total points with no errors for a .448 team attack percentage.
Caylee Brandes led the offense with 18 kills, including six in the final set, for a .325 attack percentage and two blocks.
Jasmyn Meeker and
Addison Piatt scored nine kills each.
Ava Walters dished out 26 assists with
Sydney Bleyle accounting for 19 assists.
Madison Bizjak led the back line with 24 digs.
Despite swinging .088 in the opening frame, the Quakers took set one 25-23 with help from a pair of aces. Westminster took sets two and three before being stopped by the Earlham defense in set four, holding the Titans to single-digit kills for the first time all match.
Trailing 17-12, Earlham scored a 10-1 run to lead 22-18. The Quakers then rounded out the frame with a 25-20 win.
Earlham scored eight straight points to lead 8-2 in set five, and ended the match on a kill by Brandes for a 15-9 set win.
The Quakers are slated to play a pair of games tomorrow in the Case Western Tournament. Earlham will take on the hosts at 11 am, and Mount Union at 1 pm.
