Box Score LEXINGTON, Ky. — Goalkeeper Chris Marshall stopped two shots on Tuesday that made the difference for the Earlham College men's soccer team.

"Chris Marshall saved the first and fourth shots and that was it," Earlham Head Coach Roy Messer said.

Marshall (Highland Park, NJ , Highland Park HS) and his teammates extended their season as the Quakers beat top-seeded Transylvania University (11-4-4) in the opening round of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament.

The Quakers (5-12-2) move on to the HCAC Championship match to face the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in Terre Haute on Saturday at 1 p.m.

The Engineers (15-5) beat the College of Mount St. Joseph 8-0 on Tuesday in the other HCAC semifinal. Saturday's winner earns the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III National Tournament. Rose-Hulman defeated Earlham 3-0 during the regular season on Oct. 26.

Transylvania was trying for its third straight conference tourney title, but instead the Pioneers suffered their first loss in the event since 2008.

Sixth Overtime of Season

Scoreless after a second overtime session on Tuesday, the Quakers advanced to their first HCAC title match with a 4-2 edge in penalty kicks against the Pioneers, who had won their seventh regular season championship last weekend.  

"It was a really great match," Messer said. "The guys played well and defended so we were there at the end. It's great for the guys. We had played five overtime matches this season and not won. We won this one and it is a great feeling."

Corey Campbell (Mason, OH, Mason) scored on the first penalty kick to give the Quakers the advantage. After a Transylvania miss, Irhad Strika (Bosnia-Herzegovina, United World College Mostar ) scored before the Pioneers made it 2-1.

In the third round of the shootout, Ameer Yusuf (Ramallah, Palestine, Friends) scored for Earlham and Transylvania also found the back of the net.

Michael Carroll (Fairfax, VA, Oldham County High School) scored in the fourth round before Transylvania's Conner Clark couldn't score against Marshall, which preserved the victory for the Quakers.

Marshall had four saves for the Quakers before the penalty kicks. Transylvania led 14-3 in shots and 13-3 in corner kicks.

NCAA Post-Season History

Tuesday's win was the first post-season victory for Earlham since the 2000 North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament when the Quakers defeated Allegheny College 2-0. The Quakers then fell to Ohio Wesleyan University 4-0 in the championship match that year.

The Quakers also lost in the first round of the NCAC Tourney in 1999.

Earlham's only NCAA Division III Tournament appearance was in 1998 when the Quakers got an at-large bid and lost 1-0 to Otterbein College in Richmond.
