Volleyball Ends Quaker Classic With Victory over Wilmington

RICHMOND, Ind. – The Earlham College volleyball team won its first match of the 2015 season on Sunday defeating Wilmington College 25-19, 25-23, 25-10 on the second day of the 2015 Quaker Classic. The victory marked Lauren Crump's first win as head coach.

Match One vs. BereaEarlham fell to Berea 25-10, 21-29, 25-23. After losing the first set and trailing 19-13 in set two, freshman Megan Hedinger stepped up the service line. The Germantown, Wis., native served nine straight points including four service aces to give the Quakers a 21-19 lead. Earlham would fight off five set points and even earn a set point of its own at 29-28. A kill from Kyra Robinson tied the set a 29 all, and the Moutaineers won the next two points to take the set.

In set three, history would repeat itself as Hedinger again provided a long service run. Facing match point at 24-19, the Quakers battled back to get within a single point at 24-23. Berea, however, won the next point and closed out the match in straight sets.
Sophomore Kayla Morris led Earlham offensively hitting a .217 clip while smashing 17 kills and five errors on 46 swings. Freshman setter Abigail Sheehan dished out 28 assists while Hedinger and freshman Denisha Mataia displayed stellar back row play recording 16 and 13 digs respectively.
Berea was led by Robinson and Nicole Baker who tallied nine and eight kills respectively.

Match Two vs. Concordia-ChicagoConcordia-Chicago edged the Quakers 25-21, 23-25, 25-22, 25-18 in four sets. Morris and freshman Ashleigh Burton led the way with 22 and 18 kills respectively. The two combined for 40 of Earlham's 43 team kills in the match. Morris, who hit a .326 clip in the match, also added 11 digs. Sheehan assisted on 34 of Earlham's 43 kills while Hedinger turned in a career high 29-dig performance. Freshman Naomi Onglanco saw action in three sets and had a team high four block assists.

Austin Thompson paced Concordia-Chicago to victory with 20 kills, 22 digs, and five service aces. Emily Marcus also finished with a double-double chipping in 12 kills and 18 digs.

Match Three vs. PikevillePikeville defeated the Quakers 25-22, 25-11, 25-17. Morris led Earlham with 12 kills while Sheehan dished out 17 assists. Freshman Denisha Mataia recorded double digits in digs with 10.Sydney Hall was the lone player on either team to finish with 10 kills. Setter Savanna Zakman dished out 27 assists in the victory for the bears.

Match Four vs. WilmingtonEarlham knocked off Wilmington in the Quaker Bowl 25-19, 25-23, 25-10. Morris hit a blistering .366 from the floor including 16 kills and only one attack error on 41 swings. Burton finished with 11 kills and two blocks on the match. Hedinger added 24 digs. Sheehan finished with 33 assists, averaging a season-best 11 assists per set.
As a team, the Quakers hit a.290 clip, a team-best through nine matches this season. The Quakers defense, though only recording two blocks, held Wilmington to a .037 attack percentage.

"It feels amazing to get our first win," Morris said. "I've been waiting for this feeling for a long time."
