BETHANY, W.Va. – It took more than the scheduled 60 minutes to decide a winner between the Earlham College women's lacrosse team and the Bethany Bison on Sunday afternoon. The teams were tied at seven as time expired in the fourth quarter, but the Bison came out on top with a golden goal in overtime.
The Quakers fell to 1-5 while the Bison improved to 5-5.
Serena Pisacano led the Quakers with four goals from seven shots. She also collected a team high seven ground balls and caused four turnovers.
Jillian Schlieper scored a pair of goals on the afternoon.
Meredith McGraw caused four turnovers and picked up four ground balls while also adding a goal on the offensive side.
Mackenzie Kotch made 11 saves in the cage with only eight goals allowed.
The Bison took the lead after six minutes of play with the first goal of the game. Schlieper quickly tied it back up with a goal assisted by
Josie Whorton just two minutes later. The home squad recorded a second goal heading into the final two minutes of the quarter.
Earlham took the lead in the second quarter after a goal each from Pisacano and McGraw in the opening seven minutes. After a Bison goal tied the score at four, Schlieper scored her second goal of the contest with an assist from
Mollie Lyon.
With the Quakers leading 6-4 in the third quarter, the Bison rattled off three goals within five minutes to take the lead heading into the final frame.
The sole goal of the fourth quarter came from Pisacano on a free position attempt with 13:45 on the clock. The Quakers had three more free position attempts in the remainder of regulation, but were unable to capitalize with a score.
At the start of overtime, the Bison won the draw control and marched downfield for a goal in the first 30 seconds of the period.
Earlham outshot Bethany 33-24 and won draw controls 12-7.
The Quakers will host Wittenberg University on Wednesday in Darrell Beane Stadium at 5 pm this week.
