RICHMOND – The Earlham College women's soccer team was greeted with rainy conditions in its opening game in Matlack-Messer Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The Quakers were not unsettled by the weather and put on an offensive clinic against Eureka College to win 5-0 against the Red Devils.
Earlham improves to 1-0-1 in the 2022 season.
First year player
Mallory Smith recorded the first two goals of her budding Quaker career.
Eva Lyon also had a multi-goal game and
Mollie Lyon returned to the grass pitch of Matlack-Messer with a score.
Smith notched the first goal of the contest in the 13th minute off an assist from
Liz Burley. Burley carried the ball down the right sideline and cut for the goal. As she was attacking, Burley sent a cross in front of the goal face which found Smith in open space in the penalty area.
Eva Lyon added a second goal to the lead in the 24th minute after she intercepted a goal kick and took a long distance shot through defensive players.
The Quakers led 2-0 going into the halftime break.
Mollie Lyon got in on the action in the 56th minute with help from a cross by Smith through the box. Eager for more action, Smith found the back of the net again in the 57th minute on a breakaway through the middle of the field.
Eva Lyon scored her second goal of the game after she dribbled through the defense for an unassisted score in the 72nd minute.
The Quakers outshot the Red Devils 43-0 and tallied a 10-0 lead in corner kicks.
Makayla Hurey recorded a shutout and her first goalkeeping win of the season.
Earlham will be back in action on Wednesday in Matlack-Messer Stadium against Spalding University at 4 pm.
