RICHMOND – The Earlham College women's soccer team heads into its 2023 season with a roster of 26, including 16 first year players.
THE SCHEDULE
The Quakers begin their season this Friday against Wilmington College in their annual Quaker Bowl matchup. The 2 pm game in Matlack-Messer Stadium will also be a mental health awareness event. The schedule continues at Spalding, against Bethany, at Muskingum, and against Adrian before the conference slate begins with Hanover College. Earlham will battle the Panthers on September 27 in Matlack-Messer at 3:30 pm to kick off conference play. After Hanover, Earlham hosts Rose-Hulman for the Breast Cancer Awareness Game on September 30 in Matlack-Messer, before a two-game road trip to Defiance and Mount St. Joseph. After Homecoming and Senior Day against Manchester on October 14, Earlham will conclude its regular season with three straight away games at Transylvania, Franklin, and Anderson.
THE PLAYERS`
Mallory Smith returns to the Quakers after earning second-team All-HCAC honors in 2022. The sophomore had three goals and three assists in her first season for EC. Other Quakers to watch include
Quinn Doden,
Noelle Hooper and
Makayla Hurey. Doden clocked every minute of the 2022 season on defense and earned honorable mention All-HCAC honors. Hooper scored two goals in her inaugural season with the Quakers in 2022 and saw action in all 15 games as a freshman. Hurey is the returning goalkeeper for the Quakers and earned honorable mention status in 2022. In the season, she made 13 starts with 79 saves and had a 5-5-3 record. Hurey is also 4 clean sheets away from securing the school record for career shutouts since joining the HCAC. The Quakers will be led this season by captains
Elizabeth Rakes and
Makayla Hurey.
PRESEASON POLL
For the second straight season, Earlham was picked seventh in the HCAC preseason poll. The Quakers earned 31 votes in the poll and were just above Franklin College in eighth place with 30 votes. Bluffton was not far ahead with 34 votes in sixth place. Hanover was picked to win the conference with 80 votes.
THE COACHES
Lydia Harvey and
Padgett Gustavson return for their second season together leading the Earlham women's soccer team. Their last two seasons have seen the Quakers finish with their best conference records since 2017. This season the staff is joined by
Brad Whiles a native of Wolverhampton, England and former men's assistant at Emmanuel College in Georgia.
