Baseball sweeps Principia

RICHMOND, Ind. – The Earlham College baseball team took two wins over Principia College on Sunday afternoon in Sadler Stadium. 

GAME ONE: EARLHAM 6 PRINCIPIA 5

Hayden Scalf threw 7.1 innings with a no decision as the starter in game one. Scalf tallied six strikeouts with four earned runs on nine hits. Casey Blevins scored the win for the Quakers with three strikeouts in 1.1 innings, and just one baserunner. The Quaker pitching staff did not walk a batter all game. 

Noah Rosato went 4-5 with one run scored and one RBI.Sean Jeffries went 3-4 with a run scored, one RBI and two steals. Reece Zonts scored an RBI on a walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth inning. 

With one out in the bottom of the second inning, Quin Adelson tripled to left-center. Jeffries then earned an RBI on an outfield single to give the Quakers a 1-0 lead. The Quakers repeated in the bottom of the third inning with a one-out triple by Jonathan Jimenez to set up an RBI-single by Rosato. 

With three hits to lead off the fourth inning, Principia scored two runs to tie the game. 

Rosato hit a leadoff single in the bottom of the sixth inning, and came home on a double by Mitchell Roether to center field for a 3-2 Quaker lead. 

The Panthers scored three runs on five hits in the top of the eighth, and forced the Quakers to the bullpen in the process. Trailing 5-3, Earlham responded right away in the bottom of the eighth frame. Jeffries led off the inning with a triple to right field, and came home on a double by Brendon Gibson. Nate Whetstine executed a sacrifice bunt to move Gibson to third, and the speedy outfielder scored on an RBI groundout by Noah Wagster

With the score tied at 5-5, Blevins allowed just one hit with two strikeouts in the top of the ninth. 

Rosato led off the bottom of the ninth with a single down the right field line. The Quaker DH was pinch ran for by Brock Loveall, who got a good jump to advance to second on an infield groundout. With one out in the inning, Zontz hit a bouncing ball down the right field line that was out of range of the first baseman, for a walk-off win. 

GAME TWO: EARLHAM 14 PRINCIPIA 0

Kyle Jeffries threw his first complete game shutout in game two with seven innings pitched, and just four hits. The sophomore tallied five strikeouts with no walks. 

Adelson went 2-2 with two runs scored and two steals. Tucker Williams went 1-2 with two walks, two runs, two RBI and one steal. Loveall recorded his first collegiate hit, and scored a run. As a team, the Quakers earned seven walks.

The Quakers plated three runs on just one hit in the bottom of the second inning. The Quakers loaded the bases with no outs, but hit into two ground balls where the lead runner was out at home plate. A pair of hits led off the third inning, and Roether added a run on an infield ball by Jimenez. 

Rosato tagged on a run with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fourth inning after a leadoff single by Williams. The Quakers scored five runs off of two hits and four free bases in the bottom of the fifth inning to take a 10-0 lead. 

In their final inning to bat, the Quakers put up three hits and four runs, including a three-run single by Luke Rykard with two outs. 

The Quakers begin conference play on Saturday afternoon in Sadler Stadium against Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. First pitch is scheduled for 1 pm.
