RICHMOND, Ind. – The Earlham College softball team swept Ohio Wesleyan University in a weeknight doubleheader on Thursday in Ellie Bewley Stadium.
GAME ONE: EARLHAM 4 OWU 3
Shelby Messer started game one in the circle, and threw five innings with one unearned run on two hits and four strikeouts for the win.
Tatum Rickert tossed two innings with two hits and no earned runs.
Alana Smith went 2-3 with three RBI and a double.
Faith Butler was 1-2 with a run scored and a walk.
Macie Ferguson led off the bottom of the first inning with a single to center field, and later stole second base. Ferguson then came home on an RBI-single by
Emmerie Stump to right field.
The Battling Bishops tied the game in the third inning with one unearned run off one hit and one error.
Earlham put together a three-run fifth inning, after rallying with two outs.
Ariel Clarkston singled down the left field line to put runners at the corners, and a walk by Butler loaded the bases with two outs. Smith then brought all three runners home with a double off the Maroon Monster in left field for a 4-1 Quaker lead.
OWU took its first baserunner of the seventh inning on a one-out error by the Quaker infield. The Bishops then used a pair of base hits to bring the runner around, and an infield groundout brought home the second score of the inning. Rickert closed out the game with a groundout with a runner on third base.
GAME TWO: EARLHAM 3 OWU 1
Kamdyn DePew started game two in the circle, and tossed 4.1 innings with one earned run on four hits with one strikeout. Morgan Cooskey scored her eighth win of the season with 2.2 innings, two hits and no runs on five strikeouts.
Bo Shelton went 2-3 with a run scored and one RBI.
Keely Hubbard also had a multi-hit day with two hits, and one run scored.
Scoreless through four innings, Ohio Wesleyan hit a leadoff double to begin the bottom of the fifth inning. The Bishops scored the first run of the game after a pair of singles to left field. A Quaker error loaded the bases with one out, and Cooksey came in to achieve a strikeout and a flyout to get out of the jam.
Earlham responded in the top of the sixth inning with three runs on four hits. Hubbard started the frame off with a double to the gap in right-center field.
Malaya Tanglao recorded a base hit, and moved Hubbard to third base, where she scored off of an outfield single by Shelton.
Drew Tubesing then rocked a two-out double to left field for two scores and a 3-1 Quaker lead.
The Quakers continue HCAC action on Saturday with a doubleheader against Anderson University in Ellie Bewley Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 1 pm.
