Softball sweeps on Saturday

RICHMOND, Ind. – The Earlham College softball team won a pair of games on Saturday, facing off against St. Mary's College and Elmhurst University.

GAME ONE: EARLHAM 13 ST. MARY'S 4

The Quakers got revenge for Friday's loss against St. Mary's with a 12-4 win in game one. Morgan Cooksey threw a complete game with three earned runs on six hits with two strikeouts. 

Mackenzie Harvey went 4-for-5 with two runs scored, two RBI and three steals. Cierra James tallied four hits with two RBI, two runs scored and one steal. Mikala Newland reached base five times with three runs and a double.

Newland led off the game with an outfield single, and scored on a hit by Harvey. Earlham then scored on back-to-back singles by James and Alana Smith for a 3-0 lead. 

Earlham plated five runs on four hits in the second inning. Tiffany Sowder reached as the leadoff hitter, and stole second base to kick things off. The Quakers batted around the order, and scored three runs on balls within the infield. The Quakers also tallied five steals in the frame. 

After a leadoff single, St. Mary's scored its first run of the game on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the second inning. 

Newland earned a leadoff walk in the top of the third, and after advancing on a sacrifice bunt by Malaya Tanglao, Newland scored on a double by Shelton. The Quakers put on three straight two-out hits in the top of the fourth inning, but stranded all three runners. 

Leading 9-4 in the sixth inning, Newland hit a double to left field to score Bella Schatko, and give the Quakers double-digit runs for the second time this weekend. The Quakers then ended the game with three runs on four hits in the top of the seventh inning. 

GAME TWO: EARLHAM 8 ELMHURST 3

Tatum Rickert tossed a complete game to end the weekend, allowing three earned runs on seven hits with two strikeouts. 

Cailtyn Brooks went 3-for-4 with a double, a run scored and two RBI. 17 Quakers had a plate appearance in the game. 

Elmhurst put its leadoff batter on with a walk, and scored on a sacrifice fly after two bunt hits in the first inning. The Blue Jays added another run on an outfield single. 

Emmerie Stump hit a two-out single in the first inning, and came home to score on a double by Brooks. Elmhurst then added its final run in the top of the second inning. 

Shelby Hill hit a two-out double in the bottom of the third, and scored after an outfield single by Brooks. Jade Green led off the fourth inning with a hit, and scored on a ball in play by Ashley Lewis. Michaela King then recorded an RBI with an infield groundout. 

The Quakers scored two runs on a single by Green in the fifth inning, with three total hits in the frame. 

Tanglao hit an RBI single to the first baseman in the bottom of the sixth inning, and executed a double steal with Shelton to advance to second while Shelton went home. 

The Quakers have a week off before venturing south for THE Spring Games in Leesburg, Fla. over Spring Break. Earlham is scheduled to contest eight games in five days, starting with DeSales University on Monday at 9 am.
