Quakers Fall in HCAC Tournament Championship Match

Box Score RICHMOND, Ind. — A successful season came to a close for the Earlham College women's soccer team Saturday afternoon on Matlack Field as the Quakers fell 2-0 to Transylvania University in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament Championship match.

"It was really great," Earlham Head Coach Jocelyn Keller said of the season. "They should be proud of their accomplishments."

As a team, the Quakers finished 14-6-1 overall and tied for the regular season title with Transylvania. They reached a conference championship match for the season year in a row. Earlham lost 2-1 to Wittenberg University in last fall's North Coast Athletic Conference championship affair.

This year's co-championship was the first conference title of any kind for a women's team at Earlham, while the 14 victories are the most in a season in school history. The Quakers also set a team record with 12 shutouts.

"We've been here two years now and the next step is being the team that can make it to the NCAAs," Keller said.

With the win, the Pioneers (16-3-1) advance to the NCAA Div. III National Tournament for the second straight year.

Saturday also turned out to be the final match in the careers of seven seniors. Karman Duchon (Decatur, GA, Decatur), Allie Zeller (Cincinnati, OH, Amelia), Rachel Dana (Columbus, IN, North), Lauren Berry (Durham, NC, Carolina Friends), JoBeth Buckley (Berkley, MI, Berkley), Megan Holthaus (Harrison, OH, McAuley) and Cassie Gage (West Carrollton, OH, Kettering Fairmont) were in an Earlham uniform for the last time.

Duchon leaves the program as the all-time leading scorer in school history with 54 goals, 33 assists and 141 points. This season she had 17 goals with seven assists for 41 points.

Holthaus finished the season with a pair of Earlham goalkeeping records as she recorded 11 shutouts this fall to give her 23 in her career.

Joy Doucette was the team's second-leading scorer with 11 goals and 12 assists for 34 points. Her 12 assists is a new standard in that category for a season.

On Saturday, Transylvania's first score came from Elizabeth Schmitt at 21:19 as the Pioneers grabbed the momentum.

Holthaus kept the Quakers in the match as she had a save on penalty kick by Sarah Zembrodt. Holthaus touched the ball and it bounced into the post before she was able to control the attempt.

Transylvania led 1-0 at intermission, but the Quakers had a 7-4 edge in shots and 4-2 advantage in corner kicks. In the second half, Transylvania got a goal from Natosha Boden as the Pioneers led 4-2 in shots and 6-2 in corner kicks.

For the match, Earlham led 9-8 in shots, while Transylvania led 8-6 in corner kicks. Holthaus finished with three saves.

Transylvania goalkeeper Kara Hansel had four saves, which led to her being named the HCAC Tournament Most Valuable Player.
