EC Claims Share of HCAC Regular Season Title

Box Score RICHMOND, Ind. — The Earlham College women's soccer team continues to make history.

As the Quakers celebrated Senior Day, they defeated Franklin College 5-0 on Matlack Field to win their second straight Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference regular season co-championship.

"It's been a great season overall." Earlham's Ikumi Doucette said. "The non-conference portion was really, really tough and I think we handled it really well and we're proud of our team now."

The Quakers (11-5-1, 8-1) are also the top seed in the HCAC Tournament for the second year in a row and will host an opening round contest on Wednesday against Bluffton University (10-4-2, 5-3-1). The match on Matlack Field is scheduled for 2 p.m. In Wednesday's other tournament match, No. 2 seed Hanover (14-2-1, 8-1) entertains No. 3 seed Transylvania (14-3, 7-2) at 7 p.m. The winners meet at the highest remaining seed on Saturday for the championsip and automatic trip to the NCAA Division III Tournament.

After a scoreless first half on Saturday, Earlham got off to a quick start in the second period as Ikumi Doucette (Berwyn Heights, MD, Eleanor Roosevelt) scored with an assist from Claire Murphy (Ft. Wayne, IN, Canterbury) at 46:38 to give the Quakers a 1-0 lead. The goal was Ikumi Doucette's team-high ninth of the year, while Murphy picked up her first assist.

Also on the play, Franklin's goalkeeper Christa Hendrickson was injured and she left the contest. At that point the flood gates opened for Earlham's offense, which had a 17-1 advantage in shots at intermission.

Ryder Comstock (Yellow Springs, OH, Yellow Springs) made it 2-0 at 59:47 with Paige Thomas (Bel Air, MD, Baltimore Friends School) and Joy Doucette (Berwyn Heights, MD, Eleanor Roosevelt)assisted on the play. Comstock now has seven goals this fall.

Earlham led 3-0 after Thomas scored at 65:52 with help from Joy Doucette. Thomas has four goals and two assists this season.

Joy Doucette widened the margin to 4-0 with her eighth goal of the season at 73:04.

Molly Altreuter (New York, NY, Brooklyn Friends) picked up her first goal of the year to finish the scoring at 77:34.

Earlham goalkeeper Kate Franks (Hopewell, OH, West Muskingum ) had just one save as she recorded her eighth shutout of the season and ninth of her career. The Quakers led 28-2 in shots and 8-1 corner kicks.

Franks, Kelly Sprague (Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, Cushing Academy ), Evelyn Tandy (Crittenden, KY, Walton Verona ) and Holland Rausher (Durham, NC, Carolina Friends) were all honored prior to the match for their contributions to the women's soccer program.

“They've been a part of a winning tradition here and they're the first graduating class who have finished all four seasons with a .625 winning percentage," Earlham Head Coach Jocelyn Keller said. "It's going to be a tough act to follow. They've been great and they put their whole heart into it.”

As of Saturday, the four seniors have a 49-24-3 record in their careers.
