Avis Stewart was a four-year member of the Earlham basketball team and three-year member of the track team from 1970 to 1974. He was a key member not only of the 1970-71 team that won the NAIA District 21 Men’s Basketball Championship, but also of the NAIA National Championship playoff team. In his senior season, Stewart was an Earlham all-tournament team member, an All-HBCC selection, and the Blair Gullion Leadership Award recipient. Competing in track, he was a tremendous leaper, competing in the long, triple and high jump at Earlham. He was the HCC long jump champion in 1971 and was the Earlham relays long jump champion in that year. From 1981 through 1985, Stewart was the first basketball coach in a 25-year time period to record a winning season.
