John Cell was a 4-year soccer player for Earlham from 1986-89. Cell holds the school records for goals in a single season with 18 in 1986 and career goals with 55. He was also a member of the 1986 and 1987 National Association Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) District 21 championship teams.

As an individual, the National Soccer Coaches Association of America selected Cell as an All-America two times, an Academic All-America once and All-Mideast Region three times. He also made the NAIA All-District 21 team three times and All-North Coast Athletic Conference First Team once.

Cell was named the offensive Most Valuable Player twice and team MVP once. He was also the recipient of the George Van Dyke Award and the Wendell Stanley Scholar-Athlete Award.
