Hilt Johnson was involved in a variety of activities during his time at Earlham including four sports. He was a 4-year captain of the basketball team and was the top defensive player on the squad. He was also on the football team for three years, track team for two seasons, as well as earning a letter in volleyball.

Away from athletics, Johnson was the president of his 1956 graduating class, treasurer of his sophomore class, a member of the Earlham Senate and served on the council in Bundy Hall.

After Earlham, Johnson was a full-time Professor of Geology at the University of Illinois for 36 years and served as the Director of Field Geology Camp for seven years in Sheridan, Wyoming. He passed away in 1997.
