A versatile athlete, Jerry Stauffer earned four letters in football, three in baseball, and two more in track. An integral part of the turnabout in Earlham football fortunes in the early 1960s, he started at full back and outside linebacker while also performing the punting and placekicking duties. Stauffer was the team’s leading rusher in 1959 and 1960, and the 1960 NAIA record book notes his 93-yard interception return as the third longest for a touchdown. The team’s leading hitter in 1959, he played center field and pitcher for the Quaker baseball team. In track, Stauffer competed in the shot put, discus and javelin. The physical education major continued his studies at Ohio University, where he earned his master’s degree. He has served Warren Central High School for at least 34 years, including 19 years as a guidance counselor, 13 years as head track coach, 15 years as head football coach and the nine years before induction as athletic director. His football teams won 73 percent of their games and won two state championships. A member of the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrator’s Association, Jerry and his wife Nancy ’62 lived in Indianapolis at the time of induction.
