Betsy Brown was one of the premier women athletes of her era at Earlham College, excelling in lacrosse, field hockey, and soccer during her time in Maroon and White. She received field hockey’s Comstock Award in 1986 as a freshman, while playing midfield and defense as the Quakers posted an 11-5-1 overall record, 5-1 in NAIA District 21, and a berth in the District final. Brown was named MVP of the women’s soccer team in 1989, and captained the lacrosse team for two seasons. She led the Quaker women’s lacrosse team in assists in 1990 as a senior.

During her senior year, Brown and other Earlham women formed a group called the “Women’s Athletic Movement” to lobby the administration for more support for women’s athletics. That led to Brown earning an appointment on Earlham’s Athletic Committee

Following graduation, Brown was hired by Terry Holland to be the assistant field hockey coach at Davidson College in 1991, and start the Wildcats’ women’s lacrosse program. She was named the interim head field hockey coach prior to the start of the 1991 season, before returning to the assistant coaching role in 1992. She later taught history at St. Johns Country Day School in Orange Park, Fla., is currently a seventh-grade history teacher at Durham Academy in Durham, N.C., where she also teaches middle school field hockey.
