    Special Recognition

Max Knight received Special Recognition from the Earlham Athletics Hall of Fame for his years of support and coverage of Quaker athletic teams as a full-time sports writer from 1953-62 and a sports historian at the Palladium-Item. He traveled with Earlham’s football, basketball and baseball teams as well as covered home soccer contests. Knight also served as the Quaker basketball scorekeeper for four years. He may have the most unusual E award plaudits for setting up the College’s intramural program in 1948-49. In addition to his Earlham education, he did degree work at Crossroads Bible College and the Moody Bible Institute. After leaving the Palladium-Item in 1975, Knight was the full-time pastor of the Sugar Grove Community Church until retirement in 1991. He’s the author of Somebody Stole the Pea Out of My Whistle, recounting the Golden Age of basketball referees in Indiana. His second book, The Emmaus Experience, was published in 1998. A lifelong resident of the Whitewater Valley, Knight resides with his wife, Mazella, in Greens Fork.
