A four-year member of the Earlham men’s soccer team, Tom Haviland earned All-Illinois-Indiana Conference honors in 1980 and 1981, and was an NAIA All-District selection in 1980. He played mostly at the stopper back position with some time at sweeper over his four seasons in Maroon and White, and was both a team captain and the squad’s most valuable player during his junior and senior seasons. “A total team leader,” was how Haviland was described by former Head Coach Roy Messer. “He was the lynchpin around which the whole team was built.”

Haviland was a recipient of the Florence Long Mathematics and the Wendell M. Stanley Senior Scholar-Athlete awards upon his graduation in 1982.
