As a member of the 1998 Quakers, Pettengill was a part of a team that posted a 13-5-2 record and participated in the first round of the NCAA Division III Championships. That team is the only Earlham men's soccer squad to qualify for the NCAA Tournament. After that season, he was honored by the coaches association as a NSCAA All-America Third Team choice. He was also NSCAA All-Great Lakes Region First Team.

Pettengill was an All-North Coast Athletic Conference First Team selection in 1997 and 1998. He was second team in 1996 and honorable mention in 1995.

During his time at Earlham, he was the team's Most Valuable Player in 1996 and 1997, while honored as the Most Valuable First-Year in 1995.

As a senior, Pettengill shared the George Van Dyke Award with fellow Hall of Fame inductee Orion Creamer ’99. He was also a Wendell Stanley Scholar-Athlete in 1999.
