Author of History of Varsity Sports at Earlham College (1954), Richard Shellenberger received special recognition from the Athletics Hall of Fame. A geology major at Earlham, he covered the soccer team and served as sports editor of the Earlham Post. Shellenberger also directed the intramural program and participated in intercollegiate volleyball and chess as an undergraduate. He continued his studies to earn master’s degrees in recreation and geography from Indiana University. Between degrees he served in the U.S. Army with duty in Korea. His teaching career began at South Side High School in Fort Wayne, Ind., then continued at Scottsbluff (NE) High School. Since 1972, Shellenberger has taught at Cauyahoga Valley Christian Academy in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio. He also has coached boys’ volleyball for four years and chess for 38 years. Richard and his wife Kayla reside in Stow, Ohio.
