Tom Marvel was an outstanding three-sport athlete at Earlham in the mid 1950s. A native of Chicago, he came to Richmond after graduating from the George School in Pennsylvania. In basketball, Marvel was known as a superb shooter and scored a then-record 1,155 career points. He also excelled in track as a Hoosier College Conference champion in the 220- and 440-yard dashes with times of 21 and 50 seconds, respectively. He posted the fasted time ever recorded by an Earlham man in the 440-yard dash and also lettered in football. An economics major, Marvel’s professional career was highlighted by advancing to the presidency of Heyco Metals. He received his Hall of Fame induction posthumously.
