John Gunn was an all-American distance runner during an outstanding era of cross country and track at Earlham. At the NAIA Cross Country Championships he finished thirty-fifth individually as a first-year student, twenty-ninth as a sophomore, and seventeenth as a junior. Gunn led the Quakers to consecutive seventh-place team finishes at Nationals in 1963 and 1964. As a senior, the captain won the Hoosier Collegiate Conference individual championship with a meet and school four-mile record of 20:20. Gunn also shattered the Great Lake College Association standard and Earlham course record with a 21:04.8 clocking. Also a four-year letterman in track, he made an immediate impact as Earlham’s leading scorer in the 1963 season. In 1966, Gunn lowered his two-mile College record to 9:30.6. At the time of induction, John and his wife, Gerri, lived in Flagstaff and were involved in the development of emergency medical services including wilderness medicine in northern Arizona.
