After being named Second Team All-Midwest Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (MIVA) in 1966, Stein led Earlham to an 8-2 record in 1967 along with first and second place finishes in the MIVA Tournaments. He earned First Team All-MIVA honors as a senior and aided the Quakers' fifth place finish in the United States Volleyball Association (USVBA) Championships.

After graduation, Stein remained competitive in the USVBA, playing with teams from Wisconsin and Massachusetts over the next decade. He later went on to serve as head women's volleyball coach at Assumption College (Massachusetts).
