A seven-sport athlete at Earlham, Dr. Margaret Locke competed for four years and served as the captain of the women’s field hockey, swimming, and track and field teams. A pitcher for four years on the softball squad, Locke participated three years in archery, two years in volleyball and one year in basketball. She earned membership in the E, EE, and EC clubs. Locke continued on from Earlham to earn a master’s degree in physical education and health education from Smith College, and a Ph.D. in physical education from Springfield College. A lifelong educator, Locke was a professor of physical education at Elmira College from 1959-89, and then served as Professor Emerita. She spent the 1967-68 academic year at Indraprastha College in Delhi, India, as a Danforth Fellowship recipient. Among numerous honors for volunteer service, Locke received a 50-Year Service Award from the American National Red Cross in 1996. At the time of induction she lived in Elmira, N.Y.
