During her years at Earlham, Margaret “Peg” Buell Tileston participated in a number of sports. A varsity field hockey player for three years and 1954 Comstock Hockey Award recipient, she was named to the Miami Valley All-Star Team that played in the Great Lakes Regional Tournament. Tileston also played on Earlham’s co-ed badminton team, winning the Indiana state titles in women’s singles and mixed doubles. For her efforts, she earned a Varsity E from the men’s athletic department. She was actively involved in the women’s basketball and volleyball teams. Her collegiate athletic career culminated in being named the Earlham College Girl of the Year in 1954. Tileston served as a secondary school teacher in Indiana, Colorado and Maryland for 18 years before moving to Alaska and turning her focus to the environment. A research specialist, she has received many honors including the 1996 Sol Feinstone Environmental Award for outstanding volunteer contributions to improving the physical environment.
