William J. Cope garnered national recognition in football and was a conference standout in baseball. Additionally, Cope was also a member of the track team. He was a four-year letter winner in football, where he was the NAIA passing leader with a completion rate of 60.7 percent. During his three letter-winning years in baseball, his athletic ability again brought him recognition as he was named to the 1955 or 1956 All-Collegiate Conference baseball team. In 1955, he was a member of the Hoosier Collegiate Conference championship baseball team. After his years at Earlham, Cope became an educator and principal where he again received acknowledgment, receiving the distinction District Principal of the Year in 1995. He was also active in the Hobart Kiwanis Club, where he was a past president and Lt. Governor of Duneland Division of Kiwanis in 1997-98.
